Coccinellidae: Ladybirds of Western-Europe
Subfamily Coccidulinae - Tribus Coccidulini - Genus Coccidula

     Coccidula rufa Herbst

Harmonia quadripunctata (c) coccinellidae.net

[Morphology] 2.5 - 3 mm. Small elongated beetle on reeds that does not immediately strike as a ladybird. Distinguishable from Coccidula scutellata in the field from the ruby colour and no or only one large scutular spot. The pronotum seen from directly above is widest in the middle.
[Ecology] Reed, rush, reed mace
[Distribution] Not often reported but locally common. Maybe overlooked through it's size, habitat and the fact that it does not readily stand out as a ladybird

Synonym: Coccidula pectoralis
