Coccinellidae: Ladybirds of Western-Europe
Subfamily Coccinellinae - Tribus Coccinellini - Genus Adalia

     Adalia bipunctata Linnaeus

Harmonia quadripunctata (c) coccinellidae.net

Twospot ladybird

[Morphology] 3.5 - 5.5 mm. Very common, but very varied ladybird.

The forma typica is red with two spots, but more, mostly smaller spots occur too.

The spots may be extended to the point where it seems completely black.
To distinguish it from other simular species, the completely black legs are a good indicator.

[Ecology] Common in gardens, deciduous trees, shrubs etc.
Can be found in winter among overwintering Harmonia axyridis in houses etc.
An impression that has yet to be confirmed is, that this species suffers much from food competition with Harmonia axyridis
[Distribution] Very common except in Ireland where it is population is increasing in the last years in the North
